When an author indie publishes a book, they’re not just the writer—they’re also a producer. An independent author not only writes the book, but they also hire the editors, they curate the formatting (or they learn to do it themselves). They are in charge of the cover art, the illustrations, and the font and design. They are web-site builders, and marketers and advertisers. In short, Indie authors are a special bread of writer who deserve to be recognized (whether they asked for it or not). So, at the end of 2026, I’ll be awarding some of my favorite indies of the year with a BIRDY.
